The annual General Council of the Sports Journalists Association of Sindh (SJAS) for year 2019-20 was held at the Karachi Hockey Academy, under the President, Muhammad Asif Khan.
SJAS’ patrons Dr. Farhan Essa, Khwaja Ahmed Mustaqeem along with office bearers, executive committee members, and a large number of members attended the General Council meeting.
The SJAS Secretary General, Muhammad Asghar Azeem presented the comprehensive annual performance report, which was highly appreciated by the members. The secretary informed the colleagues that despite the challenges, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, SJAS fulfilled 90% of its annual calendar. The General Council approved the annual budget 2019-20, presented by Treasurer, Irshad Ali.
The Joint Secretary, Shahid Usman Saati presented the resolution to reduce the election tenure from four to two years, which was unanimously endorsed by the members in attendance.
Another important matter was of those who left SJAS for a new organization. The General Council canceled the basic membership of those individuals however approved their conditional return to SJAS by rendering a formal apology to the General Council.
During the important meeting, the chief executive of Virtual Axes, Khwaja Ahmed Mustaqeem was introduced as the third patron of SJAS along with Dr. Farhan Essa and Dr. Junaid Ali Shah which was warmly received by attendees.
Khwaja Ahmed Mustaqeem, on the occasion, recalled his six years old association with SJAS. He appreciated SJAS’ activities for the welfare and betterment of the journalist community and added that no other journalists’ body, in the entire country, performs with this zeal.
Patron SJAS, Dr. Farhan Essa appreciated the decision to curtail the election tenure to two years and said that this move is unprecedented because mostly officials look to extend their reign but SJAS set a bright example to provide more members a chance to come forward and perform for the betterment of the organization.

SJAS delegation presented a bouquet to newly elected President Fazil Jamilee and Secretary Rizwan Bhatti. SJAS delegation consists of President Mohammad Asif Khan, Secretary Asghar Azeem, Vice President Mehmood Riaz. Joint Secretary Shahid Satii, Finance Secretary Irshad Ali, Information Secretary Maqsood Ahmed, member executive committee Shahid Ansari, Syed Javed Iqbal, member Nadeem Shahzad, Zeeshan Hussain & Kashif Farooqui.
The 4th annual “Sports Journalist & Rashid Siddiqui Talent Award” ceremony was held at the Scout headquarters auditorium. The event began with a Seminar on “COVID-19’s impact on Sports.
Seven prominent athletes, presented with “Rashid Siddiqui Talent award” for prominent performances at the junior level, were Amir Ali (U19 Cricketer), Maaz Khan (Wushu), Marium Rafiq (Judo), Amna Ghayas (Captain, U12 Football), Shahzeb Khan (captain Karachi Hockey team), Azam Khan (cricketer) and Akif Ali (Taekwando).
First Hub Jeep rally woman driver Tushna Patel, Pakistan’s number one Badminton player Mahoor Shehzad, international photographer Nasir Abdullah, senior sports journalist (PTV) Saifur Rehman and cricket encyclopedia Sohail Khan were accoladed with SJAS especial awards.
SJAS Gold medal 2020 was won by Karate Queen, Kulsoom Hazara while Dr MA Shah Gold medal was awarded to senior Sports Journalist, Waheed Khan. Senior athletics coach, Mohammad Talib was highlighted with the lifetime achievement award while Haider Hussain bagged the best sports organizer recognition for his outstanding services in the field of Hockey.
The best anchor (National) Abdul Ghaffar, best anchor (regional) Mujahid Solangi, Best anchor (emerging) Mohsin Mehdi, Best sports editor (English) Rishad Mehmood, best sports editor (Urdu) Mansoor Ali Baig, best senior reporter (electronic media) Faizan Lakhani, best senior reporter (Urdu , print) Tariq Aslam, best reporter (English, print) Umaid Waseem, best emerging reporter Muhammad Osama, best script writer Irshad Ali, best digital media producer award was presented to Shahzeb Ali Bhutto while Muhammad Asif Khan secured the award for outstanding performance.
Addressing the occasion, adviser to chief minister Sindh on Law, Costal Highway development, Environment and the provincial spokesperson, Barrister Murtaza Wahab said that talent’s appreciation is it’s actual success. He lauded the efforts of the Sports Journalists Association of Sindh (SJAS) for the betterment and acknowledgement of sports journalists.
SJAS’ patron Dr Junaid Ali Ali, president Muhammad Asif Khan and Secretary General Muhammad Asghar Azeem presented honorary SJAS membership to Barrister Murtaza Wahab.
Former captain Moin Khan said that abiding by the Covid safety protocols was an example for everyone at the ceremony. He noted that the pandemic impacted sporting activities a great deal however the situation is gradually returning towards normalcy now.
